As the final season of The L Word began filming,
Showtime announced there is an L Word Spin off in development by
creator Ilene Chaiken.
The new show will follow one of the series' current characters,
and its storyline will most likely be introduced during the series'
final season, with the finale leaving the door open for the Spin
off There is no title yet.
L-word.com sources says the show will first be aired only online.
It is not certain that it will air on television.
Showtime President Robert Greenblatt wouldn't say which character
would be spun off, though he added that the actress in question
doesn't even know about the possible series yet.
Sources speculated who the possible Spin off might be centered
around. This is what we received:
-- Alice. Not likely. Leisha Hailey is focusing on her music.
-- Tina. Not likely. Laurel is working on a development deal with
Fox.
-- Bette. Not likely. She wants some time off.
It is, likely, Jenny, Max, Shane, Jodi, Kit, Tasha, Helena.
Given the complete disdain of Jenny by the audiences, we hope it
is not centered around Jenny. Without the more likeable characters,
we don't see this as being a viable project. (See our poll at www.l-word.com/index.php).
Max is also a pretty disliked character.
Kit, while people have liked her, doesn't seem to have that much
of a following. However, Kit has been a bit separate from the rest.
Perhaps her music career jumps to a new level, taking her away from
the group and on the road?
Tasha seems aimless now that she's out of the military. Also, there
was a comment that the Spin off would be focused around one of the
"Argentina" cast. Therefore, we think it's not likely
it's Tasha.
Jodi, played by Marlee Matlin, is also not likely. Jodi was also
not a very liked character, given her role between Bette and Tina.
The character did not seem to stand out on her own, separate from
that storyline. Also, Matlin is such a major name that it's likely
she'll not continue with a Spin off
That leaves Shane and Helena. We think -- or maybe hope -- the
Spin off will focus around one of them.
Would Shane leave LA? Not likely, but again, she's aimless. Perhaps
she goes on the road? Perhaps she's going to meet the love of her
life (or RE-meet?) and will settle down? As one of the most liked
characters of the show, we think a Spin off focused around Shane
would stand a chance of success.
Helena. It's very possible that the Spin off would focus on the
rich, jet setting Helena, played by Rachel Shelley. A very liked
character, her story would lend itself easily to explaining that
she is now separate from the rest, explaining their absence.
So, there you have it. In part, it's exciting. In part, it's not
much to get excited about -- we don't know who it is, and it will
only be shown online, not necessarily on Showtime itself.
Time will tell, and we'll keep you posted!
In the meantime, GO VOTE
for who you want it to be, and talk
