| THOUGHTS
ON THE SHOW SO FAR |
|
Editorial by lnmorris
As I sit here today, I have read as many of the spoilers for season
3 that I can find and I find myself truly saddened by what I have
read.
I have followed this show since the very first episode, and was
truly thrilled to have a show on the air that looked into to the
lives of lesbians and their friends. After watching the first few
episodes, the characters that caught my attention were Dana and
Alice, both as friends and with an mistakably chemistry as a couple.
The other characters were interesting to me, especially Shane.
With season 2, you had Dana and Alice becoming more of a couple
and for that I was thrilled. Never really have, and still don't,
see the chemistry with Lara and Dana.
Then here comes season 3, with all this talk of death and separations
and what really sounds very, very heavy. I don't mind drama, but
what I do mind is that there is no one in the show right now that
is HAPPY. I know that the largest audience for this show is within
the gay community, but it really bothers me that everything is so
heavy. For non-gay people watching the show, they must wonder if
being a lesbian is this hard in real life.
I, for one, would love to the show wade through the heavy issues
that are presented, since obviously they can't go back and change
scripts now. But, I want to come out on the other side of season
3 with a long standing couple. I feel that that is one thing the
show needs. Not all lesbians switch partners as frequently as the
ladies on this show do. And while it may create great drama, it
doesn't leave a very good view of the community with non-gay viewers.
I am truly afraid that they will kill off Dana. I am not just worried
about this because she is my favorite character, and the one I personally
identify with. But because too many shows with lesbian characters
don't ever let the characters find happiness. Think back to Xena
and Buffy, with Xena, not long after Xena and Gabrielle have pretty
much convinced all the viewers that they are a couple Xena dies
for a very convoluted cause.
And, on Buffy there is the whole Willow/Tara thing. The producers
of that show made them one of the best lesbian couples around, and
then killed off Tara. This seems to be the precedent on TV, and
killing off Dana with breast cancer would really be hard.
Instead, how about a storyline showing Dana fighting bravely a
disease that is a real and present fear for so many women. Having
her and Alice realize that they are in love with each other, and
then having at least one truly stable couple on the show as it moves
forward.
Anyway, just my thoughts on what looks to be a very tumultuous
season 3.

Comments: I'm with you. This season, so far, has felt heavy. I've avoided the spoilers, but have heard rumors about Dana. It has saddened me and I hope it's not true. I truly hope they give us a few smiles this year, because there have been so few so far.

Comments: It would be so sad if they kill off Dana, as she is my favourite character, i agree with you that why can`t they have a happy ending for Dana with Alice or Lara! There`s to much killing of main characters in shows, let keep these great group of women together till the end, no matter how many seasons!!!!!!!No matter how much i love the show it would not be the same without geeky but gorgeous Dana (Erin Daniels). And i expect 1,000s of other fans would agree. x

Comments: I've been a little disconcerted by the first two episodes this year also, but am trying to keep in mind that the groundwork is being set for further exploration of key relationships: Bette/Tina, Carmen/Shane, and yes, Alice/Dana. I agree there is no chemisty in the Dana/Laura connection and expect to see something (probably Dana's illness) that returns her to Alice, at least as a friend if not more.

Comments: It's strange quite a few people don't see the cemistry with Dana and Lara. They're relationship seemed so beautiful to me and it's ending was awful. Despite Alice being my absolute favourite character in the show, I think Dana and Lara rival Bette and Tina as possible long term lovers and was thrilled to see signs they might get it back together at the end of Season 2. With nothing to go on in the 6 month fictional gap between Season 2's ending and Season 3's beginning I can only assume that Alice drove Dana away as much as Lara drew her to her. This is awful for Alice but we then Leisha asked for her character to get a little heartache for Season 3! I'm convinved Dana is not the one getting killed off. Either Bette is leaving for a new job when she works out Tina is unfaithful with a man or she gets killed off. The whole Bette/Tina thang is really upsetting. I'm with Shane on the fact that they gave us all hope and serve to show the world we can have long term relationships (I'm in one). If Alice or Tina get bumped off I'll grieve like crazy. I also don't want Dana and Lara to split up - I want them to be the wedding at the end - and if it can't be them let it be Alice and Dana (they were a great couple too!)

Comments: I agree with you - it would be really nice to have a "happy" and "stable" couple on this show. Other than that I love it!!!

Comments: agreed with not particularly liking the direction the overall show is going. i believe Dana will probably die because of her contract. if i'm not mistaken, she wants to go out and do some movies so with that, no more Dana. :(

Comments: I agree completely... The show is getting far too heavy. I don't understand why the writers would take the show in this direction... I mean clearly there needs to be some drama, but to me the show is losing its fun quality. I don't know about anyone else, but I do not watch T.V. to get depressed and stressed out, that is what reality is for...

Comments: Your evaluation of the characters is, I think, very perceptive. They seem to be somewhat unrecognizable and we have no idea what happened to them in the "six months" between seasons. To omit what happened is only one of many missed opportunities with this show. Even with their problems I always felt that Bette and Tina were the center pole of this circus. When that collapsed, the tent just fell on everyone and all we can see now is the "flapping around" underneath the canvas. Who knows what's really happening? Not me.I never even signed on to the site until about six months after you finished your terrific story. It was one I thoroughly enjoyed reading and am happy to see your name again, even if it is an editorial and not a story. Thanks!

Comments: I totally agree with you..!! I'm not saying that season 3 should be all about laughter and happyness.. but I think we had a lot of drama last season, and to make things worse now i hear that one of the main characters is gonna die? I think it sucks.. If Dana truly dies, I'll be depressed for a few hours. I agree when you say that a good idea for this third season would be for Dana to fight this real disease, but to survive it; it would give a great message, not only to lesbians only, but to straight women as well. I'm not a lesbian but I still think that if Dana survives her breast cancer it will give hope to so many women who wacht the show and who probably are afraid of this whole thing. I felt really good reading this article, and I wish that somehow the writers for the show could read this and reflect about this whole thing; but then again, I don't think there's anything we can do about it if Erin Daniels is the one who wants to leave the show to do movies... =( but oh well.. Oh and before I forget, I don't live in the US, I'm from latinamerica and i was wondering if anyone here could tell me where I could watch the episodes without having to go to shotime's website (since I can't because I don't live in the US), I really like the show, but the only way for me to know what's going on is to read the recaps.. =( so I would really apreciate it if any of you people know of a website where I could watch the episodes..Thanks a lot!If you want, you can write to my e-mail.. It's l-word-fan@hotmail.comBye =)
