  THE GOOD...THE BAD...THE INDIFFERENT

Editorial by Seahurst

Ah...a new season of The L Word. I have to admit, that because there was so much time in between seasons (8 months), it felt very surreal to be sitting down to watch a new episode of this show. During that eight months, I got so use to reading and writing about the characters here on this site in fan fic, that to be watching something new on the screen...I don’t know, it almost seemed out of place.

I did however sit down to watch this show, feeling very much The L Word veteran. After all, I had previously watched all the episodes from the first two seasons, and was quite aware of the shows many idiosyncracies in the editing, writing, etc. So I felt totally prepared for any head scratching plot twists, and confusing time lines. And, even though they were certainly a part of this first episode, aside from one big exception, I was actually...uh...okay with this initial serving of season three.

There were definitely positives in this episode. The entire Helena and Alice interaction was hilarious. I was so happy to see Helena in a different light, even though we may never know how she became this kinder, gentler Helena Peabody. She was a character, who last season I just couldn’t warm up to, no matter how much Tina did. She attacked Bette at every opportunity, and in my book...well, that is paramount to treason. However, she proved last night that her comedic timing is impeccable, and I thought that she shared an onscreen chemistry with Alice, that if built upon whether as lovers, or just friends, could rival that of Bette and Tina. They really played off of each other so well. I am still laughing over the look of confused horror on Helena’s face when she realized that Alice may be the new love interest her tarot card reader spoke of. Oh my God, that was funny!

Jenny...always a character that is too deep for me. However, you can see the emotional growth that has taken place for her over the last six months, and I look forward to watching her rejoin her friends in LA, and develop her relationship with Moria. It was wonderful to see Margot Kidder back on the screen again as Jenny’s mother.

Ah Moria...it is nice to see a butch woman on this show. And, please don’t tell me we already had a butch character with Shane, because she is not. Now, she may be considered butch in West Hollywood, and most certainly compared to the other ladies on the show she is, but believe me, compared to the butch women I know, Shane looks like a very pretty, very hip baby dyke. Moria on the other hand, so far looks to be Butch with a capital B. And what sealed it for me, was her soft voice, that sounds a little higher than you would expect. But, that is what makes her believable as a butch in my book. Coming out in the late 1970's, I met a lot of butch women/bull dykes. And, one of the things that I think a lot of them had in common, was that they were like big teddy bears. They looked all gruff and tough, but they spoke softly, and were as sweet as they could be. Of course, that is just my experience.

Dana and Lara...well, they didn’t really have a whole lot to work with in this first episode, so it is hard to comment. However, I was laughing out loud when Alice is chasing Dana in their cars, and they are screaming at each other on their cell phones. Alice puts Dana on hold to take another call, during which time, as they are careening through the streets of LA, running red lights and stop signs, Dana patiently waits for Alice to come back on the line. That was laugh out loud funny.

Kit saying she had menopause like it was a germ she caught from a toilet seat or something, really bothered me. This is a smart, independent woman, who sounded like she had a disease that is both rare and terminal. I did however like the scenes at The Planet. It is always good when the group is together like that...well, unless it is during Melvin Porter’s memorial service, then it just makes no sense at all.

Bette and Tina...I have this vision of IC having two voodoo dolls that look just like Bette and Tina, and she is standing out on the front porch of her home in Vancouver. I can see her throwing them down, and stomping the stuffing out of them...then, when they are almost flat and have her shoe prints all over their bodies, she picks them up and whacks both of them up against the porch columns. And, the whole time she is mutilating these two dolls, I can hear her screaming, “You want a happy long term couple...I’ll show you what a perfect couple looks like!!” Whack...whack...whack

I mean really...what was season two for? The Bette and Tina I saw last night...the way they acted around each other, were the Bette and Tina from season one. It’s like they went through a time warp and all of a sudden we have gone back to 2004. Only this time Tina never had the miscarriage, Bette didn’t cheat, and they had their child, only it was a girl instead of a boy. See, no reason for season two at all as far as these two are concerned!

The whole scene in their baby music class was a major deja vu for me. This was just like their group therapy session, with Bette misbehaving and Tina apologizing to Oscar...same scene, different man...Is it just me, or does Tina act subservient around most men she talks to?

Attachment parenting. Okay, I can kind of get that. After all they do live in West Hollywood where a lot of new practices are experimented with on a trial basis before being released to the rest of the country (Okay, that was a joke). However, Bette and Tina are both strong, independent women, who believe in AUTONOMY, so practicing this particular brand of child rearing, makes absolutely no sense to me...
Kate Clinton as a sex therapist. This scene was good, but wow...you had one of the funniest, most savvy women on the planet in this scene...I just thought it could have been so much more. Maybe we will get lucky and Bette and Tina will save up their pennies, so they can afford to go on another shopping trip in Kate’s toy closet!

I could continue with Bette and Tina, but suffice it to say, that it is painfully obvious that Ilene just doesn’t like these two women together, which is her prerogative. But geez Ilene, when you are trying to produce a show that will keep the viewers watching, I would think that it would make good business sense to write a storyline that would keep your core audience happy. And, your core audience has overwhelmingly said over and over again, that they want these two favorites to stay together. In my opinion, it is an absolute waste of a rare onscreen chemistry to split these two up. Remember how you keep telling us that you are telling OUR stories. Well, the vast majority of our stories include happy long term relationships. You can write about them together and still keep it dramatic and interesting...I know you can...I believe in you, afer all, you created these characters in the first place!

There you have it...some good, some bad. Either way, because it is the first of its kind, and I don’t want it to be the last, I will continue to support Showtime, and continue to support The L Word.

If gay people make up ten percent of the population, we should be represented in ten percent of all TV shows. We have one. Can someone tell me what percentage that is? However, if we can’t even support this one show, to me that sends the message that we as a community are unwilling to put our money where our mouths are, and why bother producing these kinds of shows, if we are not all that interested in supporting them?

Comments: I have to admit that in reading your editorial at least you didn't try and say how fantastic the premiere was. I have already read about how so many thought it was great. It was nice to see them all again, but I'm with you in regards to Bette and Tina, I felt like we were in time warp. Bette seemed to have lost the controlled and understanding person she had become in S2 and got right back to taking over. Tina, what happened to her strength and independence. I do agree with you that IC seems to have something against keeping the two togther as most of us would like. If we want drama we have our own lives to look at. Jenny, well what can you say about her. Moira, wasn't quite expecting the voice to be so soft/weak. Best parts at least I thought, were the gang gathered around the table at the planet and Alice not only chasing Dana but after she lost her, calling her and asking which way she went. We will continue to watch, because we need to and deep in our hearts were hoping IC is listening.

Comments: I agree with a lot of what you are saying here. For me it was a relief again to be able to laugh with this show. Most of last season was so depressing.Excellent summary Seahurst - thank you.

Comments: Seahurst...I am with you babe. If you take out the B & T part. The season premier was very enjoyable. It felt so wonderful to laugh with these women again. Friends and I have had conversations just like they were having at The Planet. You said it perfectly about IC and the voodoo dolls. I am not sure what she has against us or these characters but the whole B & T thing..is going to piss me off. Bring back the Bette of control and power suits. What the hell was all the Mama B and Mama T. My partner and I are trying to have a baby..and if we act like these two did...just kill me. I know for sure someone on the site would put me out of my misery. So, Seahurst, thank you for your words and we can only hope that IC will read them too.

Comments: Completely agree with you Seahurst. Just wanted to add that if the reason for make Bette and Tina have problems from the very beginning is to add drama and keep the interest in this storyline, I have to say that the objective is far to be reached. Having a couple fighting all the time, not overcoming their differences even if both characters have tried the whole previous season to change aspects of their personalities that were affecting them as a couple is really monotonous and betrays the realism of the story. I know it is early to make a conclusion and hope that as the show goes on my concern disappears.

Comments: i agree, especially on B&T subject...IC is obviously promoting a new hot couple, Shane and Carmen, because they are acting like B&T were in the beginning of s1...but it's true that the core audience is B&T shippers...you split those two up, you lose a big portion of viewers...but Ilene is smart, so i hope she has something up her sleeve to turn all the drama that B&T will endure into something spectacular...it least i still hope

Comments: I agree with most of what Seahurst wrote, with the exception about Tina and Bette. I have never been a big Tina & Bette fan. I like the characters individually, but try as I might, I just never saw them as a healthy couple, not even in the beginning of the series. Yes, they had their moments of love, tenderness and hot sex, but from the beginning they had problems communicating and connecting. I also didn't buy them miraculously getting back together at the end of S2. I think they rushed back together because Tina was due to have the baby soon. I think Ilene is being realistic in showing that having a baby does not fix things in a relationship, but will only complicate things. I would be all for Bette and Tina having a happy ending, if they as a couple rally took the time to work on their problems before angelica was born or even conceived. So I like that Ilene is addressing that Tina and Bette still have issues that need to be worked on if they want to have a healthy relationship.

Comments: Too true about B&T relationship. I think IC is doing the same voodoo on my hopelessly romantic heart, and it hurts. I don't know if it can last out the season.

Comments: I agree gte, Bette and Tina have a lot of issues that they haven't processed yet...but they aren't going to process them any better by throwing a man at them......or another woman for that matter.

Comments: Great editorial. Like most I agree with you on tibette. Although, it does seem that they've "went through a time warp" I really think they never made as much progress on changing themselves as we seem to think. From experience I know and I'm sure many of you do as well, that it is so easy to slip back into unhealthy patterns and behaviors once everything appears to be hunky dory again. It's easy to say "we can work this out, we can change" but it is quite another to actually do it and I think that's where we find BnT right now. They both got each other back which is what they wanted now they don't have to try as hard or change as much. I say...learn from your mistakes, when you say you'll do something...do it, quit using your baby as a crutch, and for christs sake stop this damn vicious cycle!

Comments: In some ways Bette and Tina are worse then they were before. I mean come on no mother would have a sculpture that had nails in it. I know Bette would hate a pool fence but Tina didn't insist they put up the fire poker? They didn't even try to make a good impression with the social worker. I heard "attachment parenting" and I thought wonderful now I know the rumors are true! No B&T loving this season! Don't even get me started on Shane in that dress!

Comments: Sea great editorial and I agree in regards to your discription of B & T. I don't like how they just threw them back together without truly working on them. Just all of a sudden Bette is trying to adopt Angelica without any resolution of the their relationship at all. I am waiting for another chapter from you....I miss you girl.....your long lost friend in PHX!

Comments: GREAT review and commentary, Seahurst. And your description of IC and the BnT voodoo dolls was easily as funny as the funny parts of the season premiere. Now if *WE* can all see why BnT aren't all on the smooth and cozy side of romance, why the hell can't they? Sheesh, it's enough to make *me* want to bash their heads together and say "pay attention"!!!

Comments: ~chewing on a carrot~ here, here to the death of B&T.. Oh sorry... I gotta say Sea, you nailed the first Epi... 'cept I like the no B&T thing and I think Tina with a guy will be... intersting, can you see the girls (the gang) when she brings a dude to the planet? Always well written Sea... ~giggles and is gone~

Comments: Seahurst, I enjoyed your take on the first episode of S3. I was so relieved to see some humor and family scenes at the Planet that I could sort of breathe again. I seemed to hold by breath a lot throughout S2!I am a big B and T fan and for the life of me can't understand why IC chooses to place them in such unpleasant circumstances and not show the the way out! You have commented that you have trouble writing humor, well, the description of Ic and the voodoo dolls worked for me!Overall I am pleased with this start and hope the fun along with the drama continues throughout the season. In the meantime you could always show us how B & T should really be in our fanfic world!

Comments: I disagree with the bette-tina happily ever after that everybody wants. I love these two together but it takes time to get over infidelity. What I saw in this episode was a tension and strain between tibette and I hate it but i love it for the story line. As someone has said, these two must learn to appreciate each other again and the only way to do that is to be with other people and see what you are screwing up if you don't get back with your soul mate. I didn't see a happy couple at all. I also saw a different more defiant Tina. I like it but I miss that adoration she had of Bette. I was actually disappointed in the season opener - with about half of it. I did like the sharmen storyline and the dana-alice story line. I am behind IC 100 percent. She knows how to write stories that keep me wanting to tune in.

Comments: I totally agree with you on your main points. You forgot to mention the Shane/Carmen scene chez Mamasita's casa.I loved Shane in that dress!I too hoped that Bette and Tina would rekindle their romance and have a good sex scene!I have two sons and that attached parenting seems ridiculous! No crib? That is weird.I was happy to see tht Jenny had her head together and stood up for herself. Also I really always enjoy your stories, Seahurst. You are a gifted writer.

Comments: Your commentary was wonderfully well written and hit the nail on the head. Bette and Tina seems to have lost any kind of emotional connection with each other and I don't understand it after their beautiful reconciliation in season 2. I feel so cold and hopeless watching them. Are these the sort of emotions Ilene want LWord fans to have?
