“THE L WORLD” IN LATIN AMERICA

Editorial by vacal

This is an open letter for Ilene Chaiken and her actresses, and a reporting of the success of "The L Word" in this part of the world.

We, in Latin America, still live in ultra-conservatives countries, closed societies, for this is amazing the succes of “the L Word” in Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Perú, Venezuela, Guatemala, México, Uruguay, Paraguay…

The show is a success, but not just for the lesbian community as you think, because “The L Word” is telling human and women stories and has a lot of kind of fans, since lesbians until straights women that like to live in a freedom society, in a more respectful world.

For example, we have a space in a website and in the forums of “The L Word” we have a colombian forum. I discovered that exist in that place a lesbian community and a straight community too; all of us support the show: students, journalists, psychologists, housewifes... We are women, “open mind” people, and we are full of hopes and expectations, because the Ilene Chaiken’s project open more doors in our world for the differences, for the minority groups.

Ilene Chaiken, all the main cast of “The L Word” and the lesbian community have our support and respect. We hope the show has more seasons, because love the stories, dialogues, the music and the jobs of Jennifer Beals, Laurel Holloman, Pam Grier, Leisha Hailey, Mia Kirshner, Erin Daniels, Katherine Moenning, Sarah Shahi, Rachel Shelley. Without you, the magic doesn’t exist.

Jennifer, I think that in my country, Colombia, you are an icon for many people since “Flashdance” and now is a pleasure for us can to see your job again. ¿Can you believe that yesterday I discovered a colombian radio programme called “A maniac on the floor”? It was really funny. Sure, you were that girl. You are and always will be our maniac dancer on the floor.

You are a wonderful actress and we love Bette Porter, is an honest performance, a great character. You really deserve many awards. And Laurel Holloman too. Bette and Tina represent the true love in the real life and it touchs us. We hope you won’t leave “The L Word”, you are the centre and have a big opportunity in your hands. Yours is our opportunity to work for another world. You have to consider that I‘m straight and “TLW” is for us too.

Mia Kirshner, Katherine Moenning, Leisha Hailey and Erin Daniels, for example, made great jobs in the first and in the second seasons. Pam Grier, we know you and is an honor can see your performance like Kit Porter, is excellent. All of you deserve many awards. The Emmys and The Golden Globes are blind.

In these latin-american countries is not easy can see north-american independents movies and “The L Word” is our possibility to see again the Jennifer Beals and Pam Grier’s jobs. And to know the careers of the others actresses.

Sorry for us and for the show is Dana Fairbanks really will die in this season; your perfomance, Erin, is really good. I know a colombian fan, a straight woman, that loves you. She watchs the show only for you. Well I watch the show for the idea, for the project and… for Jennifer Beals, Laurel Holloman and Bette and Tina. Together, please, Ilene. Believe me, all the main cast has fan clubs in this part of the world. And now Angelica/Olivia, the baby, has one too.

Ilene Chaiken, thank you for you courage and for your amazing show.

Comments: As a south American, really happy to read this... Just to comment that when L word started to being watch there, most of the first episodes were incomplete, they censored many scenes but after a campaign and general complaint made by the lesbian comunity of all of those southamerican countries, The L word was started to be trasmitted complete. It was an important step in our commitment to change our conservative society

Comments: Well, as a south american(Peruvian exactly), I want to say that I agree with the people who has commented, and that, I also agree with vacal, in Latin America, the society is still ultra ridiculously conservative. here, in Peru, the show was aired on cable on Sundays at 11pm. The end of season 1 was on october(if i'm not mistaken) and the uncensored version of the show is repeated on saturdays at 11:30 pm and God knows if they are going to continue with S2.As I was saying, we're still in a tremendously conservative society. recently, a gay couple(I think they were 2 men) was kicked out of a supermarket because they were kissing. I mean, how terrible is it that you can only express the love you feel for someone in your or your partner's house or in dark streets were no one can recognize you. It's indignant. It's things like this that makes me wonder, how long do we have to wait to be able to express our love for someone freely without being kicked out of any place or without someone throwing rocks?>Love the show, especially Bette and Tina, they both give us hope in a better future.*Isabel*

Comments: I am so glad the show was air in South American coutries. Our culture is still so conservative that sometimes is a little bit scary. I think the show has open the eyes of many. No just lesbians but also straight Women as well. The message in the show, embraces "Women" in many dimensions.
